Animals were life of the party at NYC's legendary Studio 54

Studio 54 could be a genuine zoo.

Although a lot of had been turned away at the door of the late, good NYC icon — which opened 45 years ago April 26, 1977 — loads of animals managed to get in.

“The stay leopard was my favorite — a pair brought it in on a leash,” recalled Gerard Renny, who landed a gig functioning stability at Studio 54 when he was just 18. “They stated I could pet it and needed to keep visitors away from it.”

“I guess I was its bouncer-bodyguard that night,” said Renny, 63, an Higher East Sider who is now director of functions at the70s-themed watering hole Ethyl’s.

There was also a snake — the in addition just one of a further guest — slithering at the bar one particular night.

“I got termed in to occur to the key bar because somebody claimed there was a boa constrictor there,” stated Chuck Garelick, who was 19 when he started off as the head of security at Studio in 1977. “It turned out not to be … but it was a very significant, really lengthy snake that someone experienced introduced in their bag.”

But some animals acquired entry on the orders of club owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager.

“There was 1 Halloween where by the front lobby was embellished as a pleasurable residence, and it experienced a maze on the floor that was coated in plexiglass, and there need to have been a pair hundred white mice,” explained Garelick, 64, who now life in Union Square and is a stability government.

“It was all blacklights, so they place a stripe of UV paint [on the mice]. Immediately after we cleared that out, they were being all over that put for a very long time. We had white mice functioning all over for months,” he explained.

Things bought a very little fishy on Valentine’s Working day in 1979, when management put in steel fish ponds in the lobby.

That night, a fire at a different Manhattan club sparked shock FDNY inspections. They ordered the club to get rid of the goldfish-filled ponds.

“So a bucket brigade was shaped with all kinds of workers, stability and the busboys — who at the time have been donning brief shorts, sneakers, no shirts and angel wings,” Garelick recalled.

“We poured [the ponds] suitable on to 54th Road, not even pondering about the goldfish,” he mentioned. “It was truly chilly that evening, and when we left that morning, there had been frozen goldfish all about the suppress.”

The club shut down in 1980 right after the founders have been convicted of evading taxes, and operated underneath new ownership from 1981 to 1986. Ex-Studio employees — who phone by themselves the “Class of 54” — are gathering at Ethyl’s on April 24 for an anniversary and reunion get together. Some recalled bringing their own animals previous the velvet ropes.

“During the working day if you labored at Studio you could bring your canine to perform,” said Myra Scheer, who was in her mid-twenties when she worked as govt assistant to Rubell and Schrager,

There was a trio of canines — Scheer’s English shepherd Mateus Good friend, a setter who belonged to Neil Wilson on the tech crew and Pepe, a chow that belonged to Studio’s private party booker, Shay Knuth — that had no cost reign.

Scheer, 71, who now co-hosts “The Marc and Myra Show” on Sirius’ Studio 54 Radio, stated, “The most glamorous, distinctive spot in New York Town at night had a few common dogs that roamed the dance floor.”
