The 2022 Kentucky Oaks will take place on Friday, May 6 at 5:51 p.m. ET. The Oaks is the appetizer for the 148th Kentucky Derby, which takes place the following evening on Saturday, May 7. Like the Derby, the Oaks features an incredibly deep field of horses from all over the world and is one of the can’t-miss races on the calendar each and every year.
Unlike this year’s Kentucky Derby — which figures to be wide open — the Oaks is a little more top heavy. Todd Pletcher’s filly No. 4 Nest is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the 148th running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks, which carries a purse of $1.25 million.
Nest, who has won four of her six career starts, will be ridden by one of the sport’s top jockeys, Irad Ortiz Jr.
Nest’s main competition will comes from No. 10 Kathleen O. (7-2), No. 7 Echo Zulu (4-10 and No. 1 Secret Oath (6-1).

Most people handicapping the Kentucky Oaks will tell you that the key to this race is figuring out which of the big four horses you want to beat and which ones you want to use.
Nest, Kathleen O., Echo Zulu and Secret Oath will draw the most attention at the betting window and it’s not clear yet which one of the horses will be the favorite by the time the horses enter the starting gate.
2022 Kentucky Oaks Best Bets & Picks
Win Bet:
No. 1 Secret Oath (6-1): While we’re almost certain to see money come in on Echo Zulu and Nest, Secret Oath could fly a little bit under the radar thanks to a tough draw. But overlook this filly at your own risk. Secret Oath is coming off a third-place against the boys at the Arkansas Derby in April. This is the best field of 3-year-old fillies you’ll see all year, but Secret Oath won’t be out of her depth here.

Longshots to use in exotics:
No. 6 Yuugiri (30-1): In all likelihood, Yuugiri won’t win the Kentucky Oaks. But given her pace and penchant for trying to get out in front, could upset the odds if Echo Zulu has an off day and doesn’t pace the field. In a field that is so top heavy, Yuugiri’s price could end up being quite tempting as a third or fourth horse in exactas and trifectas. You’ll know right away if Yuugiri is going to be a factor, since she needs to be out in front early and grit it out to have a chance in this field.
No. 9 Desert Dawn (20-1): The question with Desert Dawn comes down to whether or not you think her victory in the Santa Anita Oaks was a fluke. She was 14-1 to win that race and took it down, defeating a group of decent horses including an odds-on favorite. Desert Dawn’s previous races would tell you that she won’t be a contender here, but she should be a big price and it’s worth using her and hoping what we saw in April is the horse that will show up at the Oaks.
